Dear Parents

I have enjoyed getting to know our UK Wellington exchange students this week. Izzy and Rupert are in Year 10, so beginning their GCSEs, just as our students are. This is the first time for both of them to visit Thailand – and I have to tell you they are loving the country (and school) so far!

We have CIS (the Council of International Schools) coming in to school again the week after next. A team of seven inspectors will spend time looking at every aspect of the school, watching lessons, speaking to students, staff and parents, examining documentation, and so on. Thank you to all the parents who have agreed to be spoken to by them :)

These days, schools are inspected almost every year. Whilst it’s frankly annoying to be constantly preparing for inspections, it’s also very reassuring, I think, for me and for you!

I’ll let you know what they say, as soon as I get their report.

I’m in KL this weekend, for a FOBISIA conference, which means that sadly I’ll miss the FoW Warrior Run. Whilst – these days – I don’t often do much running, I would certainly much prefer to be here than in a boring set of international headteacher meetings!!

 Have a great weekend
Chris

There were some exceptional costumes in our Senior School yesterday as they celebrated Halloween. The day had a very creative and spooky touch as lessons were attended by all manner of characters.

One of the wonderful things about Wellington College Bangkok is the strength of our links to our Founding school in the UK, The Wellington College. We share an ethos, vision and values. We are lucky as a family of schools, to be able to share resources and ideas - to have a very strong network of professionals who can advise, inspire and learn from each other.

We are proud to support the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal once more this year. From 1 November we have been selling different types of poppies in both Senior School and Junior School. The poppy is an internationally recognised symbol which honours those who died in World War I and II and all conflicts.

An Introduction to our Green Team

This term, we have re-launched the Eco-Committee (Green Team) across the whole of Wellington College. In total, we have 35 enthusiastic student members across the Junior School and Senior School. Our Eco-Committee are working towards the WWF’s Eco-Schools Award, which aims to engage young people into environmental actions by learning from hands-on activities which will lead to sustainable environmental management.

In short, we are looking to make our school an EVEN better place by becoming more environmentally friendly, therefore reducing our overall carbon emission. This term, our main focus is on building a bigger picture of what our school is already doing, so we are currently working on an environmental review. We hope to finish this by Christmas, then we can put together an action plan and some of our wonderful ideas can begin to come into fruition!

A few easy steps that we can already take (and which you can take at home also!) are –
  • Turn off lights as we leave a room
  • Put litter into a bin
  • Recycle plastics
  • Turn off air con when we are not using it.
Some longer-term projects that you might see at WCIB could include –
  • More homes in our school grounds for wildlife (e.g. bug houses and bird houses),
  • Promoting lift-sharing to school and using our School Bus service
  • Reducing our usage of single-use plastics
  • Having a recycling station in our school grounds
  • Introducing more school-wide days to celebrate the Earth and promote sustainability
These are just a few of the students’ wonderful ideas, and if you have some ideas to share with us, please do get in touch! Ms Upton and Mr McKee would love to hear from you, and we will happily pass on any ideas to our dedicated Eco-Committee.   Please see this link for more information about the WWF’s Eco-Schools Award: https://www.wwf.or.th/en/ecoschools/

GBAC Swimming

We had a fantastic day at our 50m pool on Wednesday as we hosted the GBAC Senior Swim Meet. We were honoured to welcome Brighton, Verso, LFIB, St Andrews 107, SISB, SPIP and ANS to what was an exceptionally exciting all day tournament! Congratulations to all the swimmers from every school – they were all amazing! Support in the stands from parents and from our students was fantastic – and really gave the competitors a boost.

Top points and overall first place went to WELLINGTON! Every single Wellington swimmer achieved points for the School and helped bring home the trophy.  A huge thank you to Coach James Goddard and all his team along with all the PE and Sports teams who helped organise, emcee, score, support and inspire.
