Dear Parents

We’ve had one or two bad-air days again recently. HERE is a reminder of our AQI policy and procedures. We keep students indoors when the air outside is poor, and our filtration systems maintain air quality indoors. Nevertheless, for the AQI season (which generally ends in March) some parents do send their children in with pollution face masks. Of course, this is fine.

I should point out that PM2.5-protection masks are not typically the same as the ones we used to put on during the pandemic. N95 (US standard), KN95 (China standard) and FFP2 (EU standard) are all manufactured to filter PM2.5, whereas regular ‘medical’ masks are not. And now you may like to use (eg) an N95 mask with a breathe-out valve, which helps to make it more comfortable (but was not acceptable for pandemic-era use).

A reminder to inform us, via registrar@wellingtoncollege.ac.th, if you need to update your email addresses on our system for the FoW election voting. We will enter all the data manually during the holiday, so please let us know by the end of Sunday 18th February. If we do not have your correct email addresses (one per parent) by then, you will not be able to vote (one vote per parent).

What a whirlwind half of term!  Very active, and really exciting. See below for some of the highlights.  I will have a special announcement to make to Senior School parents some time next week; do look out for that :)

Remember that we are back in school on Monday 26th February, at 07:30 as normal.

With best wishes

Chris

Dear Parents

This first six weeks of Lent Term has seen a series of complimentary contrasts. We moved from the intellectual exertion of the Year 11 IGCSE Mock Exams to the physical challenges of the Year 7-10 Curriculum Residentials and Year 11 Duke of Edinburgh Silver hike.

On the first of these, I am immensely proud of Year 11 for the courage they showed and the seriousness with which they took the exams. “Mocks” are a fundamental part of the learning process as students move towards revision and public exams: you learn what you have prepared well, and what needs more work; what you know, and can show you know, and what needs a bit more thought and practice. There have been some outstanding results and impressive personal achievements, as well as some clear lessons about how to move forwards into the second half of term.

On the second, there was also lots of courage on display on the Duke of Edinburgh hike, which involved steep climbs and challenging distances. I have heard it also involved some challenging culinary creations. The Curriculum Residentials for all other year groups combined some challenging and adventurous activities with serious learning experiences, leadership challenges, and activities cohered around the principles of conservation, care for the world, and deepening understanding of the forests, coasts and rivers of Thailand.

Thank you to Mrs Kate Salisbury for slick and effective arrangements for Mocks, to Mrs Sally Nunes for everything that is our Duke of Edinburgh programme, to trip leads Mr Joel Holliday, Madame Nathalie Findlay, Mr Paul McCraw, Ms Rosie Scourti, Mrs Claire Bope (the residential at home lead) and the many teachers who shared their time and energies to make such a successful week.

Sandwiched in between these two extremes, we’ve had a wonderful Year 9 Parent-Teacher social evening (which I was so sorry to miss), a Year 10 Charity Project, a beautiful Wai Kru ceremony, a teacher exchange (we were joined by Mr David Wilson from TWC for a week), our third IGCSE Options Fair, after which Year 9 developed their volunteering and service credentials by working to support the Junior School Sports Day, and a week of Chinese New Year preparation before a glorious CNY Assembly yesterday.

What a first half of term. We’ll be back for part two after a short break. Have a lovely holiday, whatever you are doing.

Best wishes

Jim

Dear Parents

Despite being a shorter half term, it has been yet another busy one with so many special events in action. The first of these was our Year 6 residential trip, with students visiting Kanchanaburi to extend and enhance their classroom learning around World War 2. It was a great trip, in a beautiful location., which not only inspired the children’s learning but also supported their developing independence away from home. How super to hear stories from their time away, as well as to see deepened relationships with teachers and peers alike.

Sport has remained a great focus this term, with many different competitions being held both internally (between Houses) as well as externally (through competitions against other international schools). One of my favourite weekends was spent at the U11 FOBISIA Basketball competition; play was fast paced, competitive and full of action, with both our girls’ and boys’ teams really showcasing their skills and passion for the sport. Despite not coming in the top three (they were so very close!), it was really pleasing to see the development of their skills and teamwork since last year. They should all be very proud of their performance.

Following on the sporting successes, we were thrilled to have perfect weather and AQI when undertaking this year’s Junior School Sports Day events. With Years 3 to 6 on the front field, competing in a range of athletics and traditional sports day opportunities, Years 1 and 2 learning about healthy eating as they undertook their supermarket sweep, and Early Years becoming superheroes as they flew across the sports hall – all three days were filled with memories that we will treasure, alongside bodies that were keeping active whilst having so much fun!

Our annual Open Morning was another time to recall and celebrate this term - primarily because of our wonderful Year 5 and 6 students who were such excellent guides and advocates of our school as they toured prospective families. A wonderful act of true leadership, resulting in such positive feedback from visiting families – thank you to all involved.
And finally, our Chinese New Year festivities - marking the incoming year of the dragon – were truly enjoyed. It was excellent to see such confident dances and language rich performances within our special assemblies, as well as seeing all of our children immersed in a range of Chinese craft activities across the day. A highlight for us all was the visiting dragon and lion dance performance, which we enjoyed immensely.

We now very much look forward to next half term, with our upcoming Book Week themed around ‘Changemakers’ - exploring characters who have shown courage and integrity to change the world. We also have our sustainability themed STEAM week to look forward to, with students designing and creating items that really will make our campus more sustainable. In addition, we have our first ever Recycle Relay being led by two of our Senior students - so much more to look forward to before Songkran!

For now, I wish you all a wonderful half term.

Kind regards.

Hannah

Dear Parents

Some short notices from me.

Firstly, thank you if you have returned your Offer letter and confirmed your sibling place in Early Years. Please let us know if you need a place but you have not yet told us.

If you – or your friends – are interested in Year 1 and Year 2 places, we request that you let us know as soon as possible. As we plan for next year, these year groups are very popular. As always, we want to prioritise our community!

Finally, we have just released a very exciting Sixth Form Award to celebrate our first A-Level cohorts and the opening of our Crowthorne building in August 2025. Please contact me j.forster@wellingtoncollege.ac.th if you have any questions about this. If any of your friends would like to visit us and find out more, I would be delighted to organise a personal tour.

Have a wonderful break!

Dear Parents

As we reflect on the whirlwind of activities and achievements of the past six weeks, it's abundantly clear that the spirit of sportsmanship and dedication has been alive and thriving at WCIB.

We kicked off this term with a remarkable display of talent at the FOBISIA Basketball Tournament hosted at Rugby School Thailand. Our Under 11 teams, comprising both boys and girls, showcased sensational performances both on and off the court. Despite facing stiff competition from around Bangkok and internationally, our teams secured commendable positions, with the girls clinching 4th place and the boys securing 5th place. Their resilience, sportsmanship, and camaraderie made us immensely proud.

Additionally, our Under 13 and Under 15 Badminton teams exhibited their skills at the GBAC Tournaments, while some of our top basketballers shone brightly at the GBAC All-Star game, representing the East of Bangkok with outstanding performances.

In the aquatics arena, our senior swimmers made waves at the FOBISIA Swimming event in Phuket, achieving personal bests and demonstrating their commitment to excellence over three exhilarating days of racing.

This term also witnessed the successful inauguration of the GBAC Table Tennis tournament, where our players showcased their prowess, with the Wellington Cheetahs emerging victorious. It was a testament to their dedication and passion for the sport.

Our commitment to fostering a love for physical activity was further evident in the three sports days held this term, engaging children from Pre-Nursery to Year 6 in fun-filled competitions, fostering teamwork, and promoting an active lifestyle.

Looking ahead, we anticipate an exciting term with our U15 girls and boys gearing up for the Under 15 FOBISIA Basketball competition at Rugby School Thailand. We're confident that this tournament will be filled with moments of joy, reflection, and invaluable experiences.

As a reminder, all fixtures and tournaments can be accessed through our SOCS Sport calendar, providing comprehensive information on teams, fixtures, and results. The best way to view all upcoming fixtures is to select ‘Sport Calendar’ in the sidebar. This will give you a clear monthly overview. https://sports.wellingtoncollege.ac.th

Finally, our Under 18 football season has kicked off to a great start, with both girls' and boys' teams displaying remarkable teamwork and resilience. With promising performances in league games, we eagerly anticipate their continued success throughout the season.

Next term promises to be jam packed as the football season for U11-U15 gets underway. They have already played in various tournaments this term at both Patana Bangkok, NIST and Harrow Bangkok, challenging themselves against some of the largest schools in the city and walking away with some incredible results. We have had just over 200-football players at WCIB involved in fixtures and tournaments this term which is something we are very proud of!

We're immensely proud of the dedication, sportsmanship, and achievements of all our students involved in sports this term, and we look forward to another exciting and fulfilling term ahead.

Junior School Book Week

Thank you to our Junior School Head of English, Mr Gary Pidgeon for this lovely preview of Book Week and lots more information for our young readers!

World Book Day - Thursday 7 March

To celebrate World Book Day on Thursday 7 March, we are inviting all children to come to school dressed up as book 'characters who inspire us to be better people."

Examples of these characters may be:

  • Winnie the Pooh – showing kindness towards others

  • Paddington Bear – empathy and compassion for differences

  • Matilda – always stays true to her love of reading despite the many obstacles she faces

  • The Mouse in 'The Gruffalo' encompasses bravery, empathy, and clever thinking

To promote sustainability and encourage creativity, we ask that children create their own costumes using materials they already have at home. Crafting costumes from recycled materials allows children to showcase their inventiveness and fosters an understanding of the importance of reusing and reducing waste.

Head of English's Author of the Month

Each month, I will be announcing an Author of the Month.

Our first author is Hannah Gold. In Year 5, we loved reading her book ‘The Last Bear' - an adventure story for animal lovers - the winner of the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize & the Blue Peter Book Awards 2022! The whole of Year 5 highly recommend reading this book.

As part of my holiday reading, I will be reading her second book, 'The Lost Whale' and I can't wait to share this exciting story with my class.

From Tonnam, Shelton class (Y5)

" For the past week, the Year 5 students have been taking care of the little chick that has finally hatched. It’s now 9 days old, and it will go back to the Matty’s (Y7) farm today. We named her Potato Nugget Juliet, and she’s been very spoilt. I think every student in the Junior School has stroked her! Our jobs were to clean her cage, fill up her food and water, and make sure she was warm enough. We loved having the eggs and chick in school and we wish we could have kept her! We’ve learnt so much about life cycles and also how to take care of an animal responsibly. "

Ms Beth Upton and all of the Year 5 students would like to say a big thank you to Khun Asanee, who kindly provided the eggs, equipment, food and a lot of advice! He and Matty (Year 7) will look after Potato Nugget Juliet from now on.

All of us here at Wellington thank our very kind parent who made this project so enjoyable. If you can contribute or help us make learning even more fun – then please get in touch with your child’s Class Teacher or House Tutor.
