Dear Parents

This week we had our Wellington College Annual Review (‘AR’) school inspection. Since we’d already had a major inspection back in November (that one was CIS Accreditation, as you may remember), this one was ‘light touch’ – only three inspectors over two and a half days.

The Wellington AR is very useful. A team is made up of professional inspectors alongside senior members of Wellington (UK and international). This year, Ed Venables, Master of our Eagle House Prep School, was the new member. Ed, a Senior School Economics teacher, was one of the first people I met when I joined Wellington back in 2017, when he was Head of Admissions. He knows all about what our school really means.

The actual report from this inspection will come in a couple of weeks, but highlights from verbal feedback include high praise for very robust safeguarding systems and process (led and managed by Mrs Jeffs), the very successful Phonics programme in the Junior School (and consequently high levels of ability in reading and writing), the distinctive and highly effective learning environment, and – most of all – the hugely impressive character of the students themselves, who are confident, happy, friendly and ‘wonderful ambassadors for the school’.

With best wishes

Chris

Little Shop of Horrors

There’s no need to be downhearted that Dragon Days is over! There’s not long to go until the next amazing production – Little Shop of Horrors by our very own Senior School students. This story is filled with singing, dancing, a flesh eating plant, a cruel dentist, Skid Row, death and mayhem… It’s comic horror at its finest! It’s coming to our theatre on Thursday 20 June. All we can say is “Feed me!”

Summer Formal – Prize Appeal!

Our fabulous Summer Formal will soon be here. This year our Year 9, 10 and 11 students will be enjoying a wonderful evening at the Grand Hyatt Residence on Saturday 15 June. Wellington Classbook

The printed copies of our Classbook will be with you very soon. Our Director of Marketing and Admissions, Jane, Designer, Ploy and all the Marketing team have been working hard on making this better than ever. Our teachers and House Tutors have given the pages their approval and we always like to give parents a sneaky peek. Later on in the year we will be producing two companion magazines – Wellingtonian – Senior School and Wellingtonian – Junior School where you will find loads of stories and pictures of an incredible academic year. Please get in touch with us j.forster@wellingtoncollege.ac.th with any thoughts.

Wellington Sports and PE Kit

This academic year, we switched the supply of our PE kit and sportswear from Canterbury to New Balance. There have been many positives and some learning from this change. The football and basketball team kits are really striking in their design. Many parents, students, and coaches of Wellington and the opposing teams have commented on the vibrant colours. These shirts are also high quality and durable, compared to the local suppliers that we used as a temporary option last academic year, but they are also more expensive. The cost of the Senior PE kit has been lower for parents, whereas the Junior PE kit has increased in price, even though we have charged this to parents at cost price to minimise any increase.

In view of the mixed feedback over the last year, we are proposing to undertake a formal review and consultation with parents, staff, and students in Michaelmas Term of PE kit and sportswear. We will reach out to you around October for your views to determine the best way forward for August 2025, when the current contract with New Balance expires. Therefore, we have decided to extend the 12-month period, during which students have worn the old Canterbury PE kit, for a further year until the end of the 2024-25 academic year. We will continue to sell the old Canterbury kit in the School Shop whilst the stock lasts, at the discounted price, but with the clear understanding that it cannot be worn to school after Summer Term 2025.

For 2024-25, we are also excited to announce that Wellington will be the first school in Thailand to partner with Trutex for school uniform. Trutex is the market leader for school uniform in the UK, established for 150 years, and has been rapidly growing its international clients. Trutex is known for manufacturing shirts, trousers, skirts, ties, and blazers of the highest quality, comfort, and design, and within the same price range as the competitors.

Please get in touch if you have any comments.

Year 10 Exchange with Wellington UK

Our Year 10 students, Chevan and GaemYui are coming to the end of two fabulous weeks in the UK, staying with TWC students, Rupert and Izzy. As well as attending lessons, experiencing boarding life and playing a variety of sports – Chevan and GaemYui have been on some exciting trips, too.

We’ll share more of their experiences soon and are delighted to share a video of the four students here in Bangkok last year. If you want to know more about the Exchange Programme then please contact Mr Stewart Findlay.

Table Tennis

Wellington College Table Tennis team secured an enthralling victory over a very strong Singapore International School team on Saturday 18 May. The successful outcome was secured in the penultimate game won by Punn (Year 4). The top performers for the Wellington Dukes, with three wins each, were TT (Year 7), Mattie (Year 7), Gabriel (Year 5), and Raphael (Year 4). There were also two wins apiece, plus a doubles victory, for the team’s youngest players, Sean and Paman (both Year 3), who were making their debut in this fixture. Matches with SISB are always close and the scores have gone the other way before so we are really looking forward to next time!

Next for the Wellington team will be a match against the Prasarnmit International School Academy on 6 June, before the ITC Global Tournament in Central Bangna on 15 June, with 15 Wellington players entered for this prestigious event. Table Tennis at Wellington has developed at an incredible pace over the last 18 months, under the expert guidance of our Thailand National Team Coach, Pla, and the leadership of our Head of Table Tennis, Dr Peter Church.
