Dear Parents

And finally in my list of farewells (mais certainement pas le moindre): M Fabrice Blum, our first Head of Computing, who has built a robust department, educating and inspiring students in computer science, robotics – and, in the early days, Design Technology. The popularity of his subject is demonstrated by the high number of students selecting Computing at IGCSE. Fabrice’s urbane panache will be much missed by students and staff alike, as he heads back, for a while, to the home comforts of France.

And that’s all for this year: today is Day 180. Well done, everybody. Your children have done some amazing things since Day 1, which was 23 August 2023. Students and teachers can go home (or on holiday) and have a very well-deserved rest.

The campus, though, will remain very busy. Our works schedule is packed, and you will see some very positive outcomes when you return. New teachers’ staff training begins on 7 August. And Michaelmas Term starts on Thursday 22 August. See you then :)

With best wishes

Dear Parents

As we come to the end of what is only our third full year as a Senior School, I am struck by just how much we have achieved, and how much we have grown as a school, in such a very short space of time.

Inevitably, a lot of attention this term has been on IGCSE exams. I would like to say a big thank you to all the parents and students who took seriously our request to be quiet in the Skylight Building and in Café 1815 while exams were taking place. I would also like to say a big and very sincere thank you and well done to each and every one of our Year 11 students who sat exams this term. We do not yet have the results – they will come soon enough – but if grades were determined by effort and perseverance alone, we would be heading for a clean sweep of A*s! One of the wonderful things about Wellington is the way that our community pulls together to support all its members; as our oldest students made the move this year from Mock Examinations in January to public examinations in May and June, I was struck by how wonderfully students, parents and teachers came together to work towards that common goal.

It seems like a long time ago now, but we began this academic year with three floors in the Skylight Building. We end the year with five. In Lent Term we added a fourth floor composed of state-of-the-art Science facilities, a new base for the Senior School library, and several new teaching and learning spaces. Just before Songkran we added a fifth floor with a new Sixth Form Centre (which Year 11 students have already made their own as an exams base during IGCSEs), a new multipurpose examination hall, and what must surely be Bangkok’s finest Art Department with incredible light and views out over the city.
On the fifth floor for the past fortnight Year 11 students have been involved in the Transition to Sixth Form Programme. The programme has been a carousel of events including A Level seminars, a charities and volunteering workshop, team building and leadership activities, emergency first aid training, an afternoon of ice baths and meditation (really!), a bowling trip, and BBQ, and a significant number of hours spent planning the Student Leadership Afternoon for the whole Senior School, which took place on Wednesday and it was truly excellent. I have been impressed by everyone’s engagement and performance throughout the programme, and I would like to say a special thank you to teachers who put together these important transition experiences.

As the year has progressed, our links with The Wellington College (TWC, UK) and the wider family of Wellington Schools has become ever stronger as several one-off events have become important traditions. This year saw the third incarnation the Peer Mentoring Programme in which Year 13 students at TWC shared their wisdom and experience with our Year 9 students as they begin to plan their journey through IGCSE Options choices. We have also had our second Year 10 student exchange in which Izzy and Rupert joined us from TWC in Michaelmas Term, while Gaemyui and Chevan made the return trip to Crowthorne for two weeks in Summer Term. Just as this Summer Term comes to an end, we wish our second delegation of Year 8 students bon voyage as they make their way to Crowthorne in the UK to join the Wellington Family of Schools Summer School at TWC for the first two weeks of July. Having joined the trip last year, I am sad not to be joining them – I know what a fabulous programme of activities they have before them, and I am very sure they are going to have a fantastic (if quite exhausting!) time.

There is so much to say about Senior School sports that it is impossible to summarise in a few short sentences. This year our sports men and women have continued to punch well above their weight at local, national and international levels. Earlier in the year, you will remember, we hosted our first visiting international sports team, as footballers from Bishop Cotton School in India joined us for a football friendly; later in the year, our Under 15 girls won the basketball conference league and came second in the FOBISIA Basketball competition. Jackfruit continues to excel and took First in the FOBISIA Tennis competition for the second year running. The Under 13 footballers put in a highly competitive show at their FOBISIA tournament in Chaing Mai a few weekends ago. Our golfers, so ably led by Coach Michael, continue to excel, while no fewer than ten swimmers, supported by Coach James, qualified for the Thailand Nationals taking gold, silver and bronze medals in a range of events and coming 7th overall, the highest position achieved by any school team.

As I reflect upon this year, I am struck, as I often am, by what an exceptional school this is. The combination of outstanding teachers and dedicated staff, supportive parents, and students who take pride in being part of this community, makes Wellington a very special place indeed. As I come to the end of my third year as the founding Head of Senior School, I realise just how much I am going to miss the many colleagues, students and parents who have helped to make my time here so enjoyable.

It has been a pleasure and a privilege to lead the Senior School during the first three years of its journey. I wish you all – students, parents, and teachers – the very best of luck and much deserved success in the years to come. Do keep in touch.

Best wishes

Jim

Dear Parents

As our final term of the academic year draws to a close, we look back on another outstanding year in Junior School.

We started the term with our Global Citizenship week, where students were inspired to find out about different people and places in Bangkok. Visits by local charities, trips to sustainable farms, visits from parents to talk about their jobs, and opportunities to explore a fire truck all combined to further open our children’s understanding up to the world around them. The week was brought to a close by learning about the Chaiyapruk Foundation, where we were so inspired by the work of the doctor who runs this incredible organisation.

Another wonderful highlight has been this year’s KS2 production – ‘Dragon Days.’ With Year 6 taking the main roles, and Years 3 to 5 supporting with singing and dancing. It was wonderful to see the power of collaboration focused on the arts. The live band playing throughout was also quite brilliant, showcasing our excellent student musicians.

Trips out of school have also been key this term, particularly with Early Years who visited a local farm, as well as the Sealife aquarium. Trips always provide our students with imaginative ways to bring learning to life outside the classroom, and they were lucky to see so many different animals in these places. Year 2 furthered these experiences with their safari sleepover in school – for many this being the first night they had ever spent away from their parents. And Year 3 also had the opportunity for a night away during their residential to Bang Sai.

Sporting opportunities have continued to be in abundance, with students participating in multiple competitions against other Bangkok schools. One of the most memorable of these was the Bangkok Games, where Years 5 and 6 took part in six different sports over the course of just 5 days. Such variety and opportunity for all, it was great to see the Wellington spirit rise high throughout the week.

Open classrooms this term were a fun way to share learning experiences with our parents, with children showcasing their favourite moments from the year as well as taking part in a range of creative activities. It is always such a delight to be able to share learning with parents, supporting the ever-developing partnership between school and home.

And finally, the finale of the school term was a fun themed day of magicians and inflatables – many thanks to our House parents for arranging this for our Junior students.

The end of the academic year is always one of high emotion – anticipation for what will be coming, sadness for those who are leaving, as well as of course huge excitement for the holidays and next year! You should be so proud of everything your children have achieved this year – I know I am! Thank you so much to all of our staff, parents and of course students for another wonderful year in Wellington Junior School.

Have a brilliant summer break, and I look forward to seeing you again in August!

Hannah

End of Term Parties and Banquets

A huge thank you to our very generous parents for helping us celebrate the end of term. We are amazed at the kindness and creativity of all our parents. From the Year 4 Banquet on Thursday morning where our humble JS Dining Hall was transformed – to a spread fit for royalty at the Year 6 Party in the Skylight building. We can only share a few pictures here but lots more to come!

End of Term Treats

Our parents have made this end of term very special. Aside from class and year group parties, the JS have been visited by Bozo the Clown and his balloon twisting assistants. The inflatables were up in the Sports Hall all day on Thursday and today has seen the Senior School treated to pizza, bingsu and bubble tea. And – of course – a fabulous photobooth in both lobbies is a perennially popular treat.

To cap it all we joined forces with parents to treat our Junior School students to Dairy Queen ice creams – and a treat of Milk Tablets from our friends at D Chan.

Year 9 Trip to Kanchanaburi

Year 9 travelled to Kanchanaburi today as part of their Year 9 History curriculum. The students have been studying World War Two with a particular focus on the conflict in the Asia Pacific region and the Japanese sphere of influence.

Today they visited the Thailand Burma Railway Centre in Kanchanaburi. Wellington were given a personalised presentation by the founder of the centre, Mr Rod Beattie before completing a research task in the museum.

The students then made their way with Mr Beattie to the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery (Don Rak). The students explored the area and learned of the different nationalities, regiments, religions and ages of the war dead buried in the cemetery. Mr Beattie shared his knowledge of the site and his decades of working for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission in Thailand before founding the museum across the road.

From golf to swimming, table tennis to cricket, our teams and individuals have excelled in both local and international competitions, showcasing their skills and commitment to sporting excellence. Each discipline has seen remarkable progress and success, underscoring our school's commitment to nurturing talent, fostering teamwork, and promoting a passion for sports among our students. Here’s a glimpse into the outstanding performances and achievements of our athletes this season.
Football

It has been a fantastic year for Football at Wellington with continued growth in both boys and girls across all ages. We have utilised our excellent facilities to host more than half of the GBAC football tournaments, which included the All-Star game which had many Wellington representatives.

We expanded the provision of A team and development squads which has seen over 200 students play football in some capacity this year.

We are delighted to be entering in an off-season league next year – Siam Schools League which will see us play competitive football year round and continue see us developing our relationship with top football schools in Bangkok.

We are very thankful for the work with our teams from CUKI this year led by Coach Martin. A shoutout to all our coaches: Mohib, V, Yok, Tan and Prin for another successful year at Wellington.

Basketball

Our Summer term has provided lots of fantastic action on the Basketball court with lots of chances to shine for students across the age groups.

Wellington welcomed the Thai National ladies three on three team, who used the school as a training base to prepare with Coach David for various summer competitions. Our students had the opportunity to learn from the girls during coaching workshops, where they had the chance to gain coaching advice and watch the girls in action at an exhibition match, which was a great experience for them.

On the court, it was a busy term for our U11 students who had numerous matches and competitions. They competed really well in the St Andrews three on three competition, and took part in the Bangkok Games with all of our teams winning numerous matches.

Our U9 programme continues to go from strength to strength, with numbers continuing to grow it is great to see our U9 students working so hard during practice. This practice clearly paid dividends, as both boys and girl’s teams picked up a silver medal at the GBAC tournament which is testament to the hard work they have put in.

Overall, it has been an incredible year for Basketball here at Wellington and it’s amazing to see our students committing to training and playing all year round. We are immensely proud of this year’s successes and can’t wait for next year’s GBAC season to get started. Please note check-in sessions to decide Basketball teams will be during the week 26-30th August. The schedule will be released at the start of term.

Golf

This term golf at Wellington International School Bangkok was a roaring success! Over 20 golfers of different ages showcased their skills at the Wellington ISGT host event at Amata. We have continued to represent strongly with the highest participation number in the Development tour and Main tour event. Despite finishing 2nd overall by just 2 strokes, we had division winners who shone brightly and personal best scores from our development tour players. Not stopping there, our talented golfers achieved individual triumphs in external competitions, with 5 students currently gearing up to represent us in high-profile tournaments in the U.S., some aiming for university recruitment it's an exciting summer ahead. To top it off, our new state-of-the-art short game area promises to elevate our students' training experiences, setting the stage for even more remarkable achievements in the future.

Swimming

The Wellington College Bangkok swimming team has demonstrated exceptional dedication and hard work over the summer term, culminating in impressive achievements across multiple competitions. Their relentless training and perseverance have paid off, showcasing their talent and teamwork in the pool.

One of the highlights of the term was seeing 11 swimmers qualify for the Thailand National Age Group Championships. This prestigious event saw standout performances from Orca, Baikao, Skye, Maya, Leila, Klarnissa, and Q, all of whom brought home medals. Their success not only highlights individual excellence but also the strength of the team as a whole.

Wellington College also had the honour of hosting the GBAC Primary meet. Our swimmers put in outstanding performances, securing a commendable second place overall. The girls' team particularly excelled, earning the top points trophy and demonstrating their prowess in the water.

The Bulldog Das Swim Meet was another remarkable event for the team. Many swimmers achieved personal best times, racing at incredible speeds. The team's collective efforts earned them the Top Net Points award, along with numerous individual trophies and medals.

Following this success, the team continued to excel at the Dragon Sprinter Meet held at Concordian International School. The swimmers' impressive performances resulted in winning the Top Points and Gold Medals Won trophies, further establishing Wellington College Bangkok as a force to be reckoned with in the swimming community.

As the summer term draws to a close, there is one more meet remaining, and the anticipation is high. From juniors to seniors, every swimmer has contributed to making this term a fantastic success. The dedication and achievements of the Wellington College Bangkok swimming team are truly commendable, and we look forward to more stellar performances in the future.

Cricket

The highlight of the cricketing year was the second Summer Sixes Cricket Festival hosted by Wellington in June 2024. This year there were 100 players from five schools competing in U13 and U11 tournaments. The last three years of dedication and weekly cricket coaching paid dividends for the Wellington teams with success in both tournaments. In the U13 tournament, the Wellington College Cheetahs, coached by Mr Dass and captained by Sky (Year 7), were victorious over Rugby School in the final.

The U11 final featured the same two teams, and an identical result, as the Wellington College Cheetahs narrowly edged the game, with a match winning batting performance from their captain, Gabriel (Year 7), after outstanding fast bowling from Punn (Year 4) had restricted Rugby School to just 13 runs from their 6 overs. Earlier in Summer Term, the Wellington cricketers had also played their annual Twenty20 fixture against The British Club, which was a keenly contested match and a hard-earned victory inspired by exceptional batting from the club captain, Sky. After three years of leading the School cricket club, Sky now hands on the captaincy in 2024/25 to George (Year 6), who will be supported by vice-captain, JJ (Year 6).

Table Tennis

The table tennis players have trained hard and made significant progress this academic year, under the guidance of the Thailand national coach and #1 ranked over 40 female player, Coach Pla. Summer Term started with a challenging fixture against the Prasarnmit School Academy, where it was the younger development players who excelled, including Kraam (Year 4) and Sean (Year 3). Wellington had fourteen students competing at the national Joola ITC Global Tournament at Central Bagna, with Sky (Year 4) progressing to the last 8 in the U8 category, and Raphael (Year 4) battling through to the last 16 of the U11s.

The term ended with the annual Wellington Table Tennis Championships 2024 on the last day of WEX. In the doubles event, Gabriel (Year 5) and Home (Year 7) retained their title and unbeaten record having never lost in the two years of table tennis at Wellington, although they were pushed very hard in the final by TT (Year 7) and Ben (Year 4). Raphael (Year 4) and Kraam won the bronze medal. In the singles championship, Gabriel remained unbeaten for the fifth consecutive term, beating Ai (Year 7) in the final; whilst Raphael won the golden point decider in the bronze medal match against club captain, Mattie (Year 7).

The Wellington Dukes Table Tennis Academy is in a great place to push on for more success in 2024/25, including hosting the inaugural Fobisia tournament in March 2025, with the sponsorship support of Villa Market, the expertise of Coach Pla, and with Gabriel appointed as the new club captain for next academic year.

Swimming

The Wellington College Bangkok Swim Team concluded the school year on a high note by delivering outstanding performances at the Swim Stars Swimming Competition. This final meet of the year showcased the swimmers' dedication and hard work, with many achieving their best times and gaining invaluable racing experience against top-level competitors.

The team’s efforts were rewarded with a haul of medals, including Golds from standout swimmers Q, Leila, Pangrum, Pippa, Stefanelle, and Baikao. These victories not only highlight the individual talent within the team but also reflect the collective strength and competitive spirit of Wellington College Bangkok.

Competing at such a high level has provided our swimmers with the experience and confidence needed to continue improving. As we look forward to the next season, the excitement is palpable. The progress made this year sets a strong foundation for even greater achievements in the future.

With the support of coaches and the enthusiasm of our swimmers, the Wellington Swim Team is poised for more success. We are excited to help our swimmers reach new heights and continue their journey of excellence in the pool.

Football Under 11s

The Wellington Football season concluded last week with our Under 11 Boys playing in the GBAC East vs West final against ANS. It was a very competitive match and very entertaining to watch which was a credit to both sides trying to play football in the right way. We are very proud of our boys making the final and we look forward to qualifying for more next year.

Congratulations to ANS and thank you for hosting the final. Thank you to our supporting parents who have been in attendance all season and to our amazing coaches and PE teachers. You all deserve a rest over the summer - before the excitement of the 2024-25 season!
