Dear parents
Every parent, guardian and staff member at Wellington College Bangkok is a member of the Friends of Wellington (FoW). We all belong, and we all belong equally: it is our community. And the FoW has a Committee.
The purpose of the Committee is to organise events, big and small, which will support and bring our community together. It is a small team of parents, comprising a Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary and Treasurer, alongside some co-opted members and representatives from the school (including me).
Our Committee has always been amazing: dedicated, dynamic, determined parents who have been tireless in their support and work for the whole community. Most of you will know the Christmas Fayre, which has always been the astonishingly successful and enjoyable centrepiece of our FoW year.
Shortly, we will begin preparations for the FoW Annual General Meeting (AGM) – This meeting is open to all members of the school, and is where the committee will be chosen, by secret vote of all those present at the meeting. (No campaigning before the meeting.) The meeting will be held in the theatre on Thursday 10 October at 8.00.
If you would like to stand for any of the four Committee positions – Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary and Treasurer – please let me or Jane Forster, our Director of Marketing and Admissions, know. The School will run the AGM process on the day.
In case you were wondering, our Christmas Fayre Task Force is already very hard at work planning this year’s event, which will be held on Saturday 7th December. Do put that in your diary now: it’s not to be missed!
Have a splendid weekend
Chris

Senior School In Full Swing
Our Assistant Head of Senior School, Mr Stewart Findlay, has shared an update on the start of the academic year for our Years 7-12.
There has been a real buzz around the Skylight Building and it has been great to see the Senior School running at full steam. It has been wonderful to welcome new students into our community and witness them becoming Wellingtonians and displaying our College Values. As a school, we celebrate students who have shown exemplary values at our weekly assembly.
Over the past week I have emailed an updated version of our Safeguarding guidance to parents as well as an overview and timetable of the individual student photos.
At Wellington we pride ourselves on the students being dressed smartly, this includes wearing ties, buttoning up of top buttons, wearing appropriate shoes and ensuring blazers are worn to Assembly each Wednesday. We have been impressed but it is important that these standards are maintained.
A final reminder that our students do not have access to mobiles phones during the school day, these are collected by Tutors each morning. |

Senior School
Individual photos are taking place next week in the Skylight Building Atrium.
On the day of their photos, your child will need to be in full school uniform, this includes blazers, ties and black shoes.
Sixth Form (Year 12) students should wear business dress as usual.

Mid Autumn Festival
The Mid-Autumn Festival, a traditional Chinese Festival, falls on 17 September this year. During this time, families gather to enjoy mooncakes and admire the moon. In our Mandarin classes, our teachers have also provided a rich cultural experience for our students. They have shared the legends of the Mid-Autumn Festival, and students tried making mooncakes, practicing calligraphy, and playing traditional Chinese games together. It has been so much fun for everyone involved!

YSLMUN at Wellington
Saturday 24 August saw Wellington host the prestigious YSLMUN tournament here in our theatre and Skylight building. It was exciting to hear the sound of 170+ students (including 12 from Wellington) and their moderators and supporters as they discussed the following topics -
- UNEP Topic: Addressing the concern for environmental justice with regards to indigenous rights
- ECOSOC Topic: Discussing the viability of the Belt & Road Initiative
- CSTD Topic: Discussing the viability of nuclear energy to tackle climate change
- DISEC Topic: Question of the demilitarisation of the Arctic
- WHO Topic: Question of the privatization of the Global Pharmaceutical Industry
- UNSC Topic: Situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
We congratulate the organising team, chairs, delegates and pages who did a wonderful job. A highly engaged, informed debate was carried out with a spirit of camaraderie and fun.
We thank Mr Paul McCraw and the Wellington team for organisation and liaison with the YSLMUN representatives. Do get in touch with Mr McCraw if you are interested in debates, MUN, lectures and more. There are tons of opportunities coming up as our school continues to grow!

Upcoming Parent Workshop
We are delighted to welcome Junior School parents to our upcoming workshop - How to Protect Your Child Online. This will take place at 8.00 on Tuesday 24 September in the Theatre, and is suitable for all Junior School parents.
This workshop, presented by our new school counsellor - Mr Roland Madrigal - is aimed at supporting parents in understanding the risks of allowing children to be online, as well as providing an opportunity to discuss the preventative measures that can be put in place to protect your child at home. Mr Madrigal will also be discussing some risks of unsupervised internet access and onlinegaming, ending by discussing different ways to encourage children to live as more balanced, productive, and safe digital citizens.

It's always exciting to see every student learn and grow here at Wellington College Bangkok. One of the ways the children can develop their independence is with a new student leadership coaching programme for Year 3-6 students! This unique opportunity empowers students to develop self-awareness, explore their passions, and practise essential leadership skills like active listening and solution-focused thinking.

Basketball
Our Basketball season has started in earnest with our teams playing their first GBAC games this week. Each week we will feature a few of our games to give a flavour of all that is going on!
Under 19
Our Under 19 Boys played TSIS as their season opener and it was great to see so many new faces along with our experienced players. Although it was low scoring there was lots of excitement. The boys certainly worked hard and gained some valuable experience from the game.
Our Under 19 Girls also played TSIS in the first game in school history for Under 19 girls. There were many first time team players and several players were playing up in age division. It was fiercely competitive, back and forth affair. Lots of our girls gained valuable experience competing in pressure situations as we had some key players missing on the day. We are looking forward to this team really taking off over the next few weeks |

Swimming
Our youngest swimmers have had a great week – as Coach Phoom led a team to the Mini Storm Cup. This was a wonderful opportunity for some fun, competitive swimming. The array of medals and certificates (Speeding Tickets) was vast and the children were all very happy with their performances. We give a shout out to the whole Wellington team – including Manow who won FOUR Gold medals! Well done to Tawin and Akin who were singled out by the Coach for their achievements. |

COBIS Art Competition: "Magical Moments"
We are excited to announce that our school will be participating in this year’s COBIS Art Competition, with the theme "Magical Moments." This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to showcase their creativity and compete with young artists from COBIS schools around the world.
How to Participate: The competition is open to students in the following categories:
- Early Years and Foundation Stage + Key Stage 1
- Key Stage 2
- Key Stage 3
- Key Stage 4
- Key Stage 5
Each year group will hold an internal competition, and one student from each group will be selected to represent the school in the international competition.
Judging Criteria: Entries will be judged on:
- Imagination and originality
- Overall impact of the artwork
- Technical skill and creative use of materials
- Adherence to the theme "Magical Moments"
Submission Process: We kindly request that all artworks be completed in the students’ own time, outside of lesson hours. Once finished, submissions can be returned to the students' homerooms and passed on to the Art department. The final deadline for submissions is Wednesday, 30th October 2024.
Winners from the international competition will receive certificates and prizes, and their artwork may be showcased at the COBIS Annual Conference in May 2025!
We encourage all our talented young artists to take part in this exciting competition.
Let’s celebrate their "Magical Moments" together!
