Dear Parents

On Thursday, we celebrated Wai Kru day. Our Thai Department did a wonderful job in a special Senior School assembly, creating a memorable, enjoyable, and respectful event. We do have outstandingly committed and talented teachers, and I am very grateful for the specific opportunity to celebrate that fact, and to thank them for everything they do.

Last week, I noted that in the UK we don’t have a ‘children’s day’. We also don’t have a ‘teacher appreciation day’. In fact, teachers can feel quite embarrassed if they are not accustomed to such a thing. This is a really interesting aspect of the intercultural experience in an international school. It is very easy to cause accidental offence: embarrassment can look like rudeness, even though it comes from a cultural humility which is actually an expression of politeness. We must always keep our minds open, and our cultural antennae alert!

Yesterday, on behalf of the School, I attended a big event at Bangkok’s Grand Postal Building, celebrating 170 years of diplomatic relations between the UK and Thailand. It was very interesting to learn a little more about the Bowring Treaty of 1855 between our two countries, which is historically fascinating for a number of reasons. And great to talk about Wellington with a number of possible new families!

The weather looks set fair for a very pleasant weekend; I hope you get a chance to enjoy it.

With best wishes

Chris

Wai Kru Celebration

We give our thanks to Head of Thai, Kru Bee and all our students for honouring our teachers today on National Teachers' Day here in Thailand. Students performed the traditional Wai Kru ceremony, presenting flowers to their teachers on stage in a special Senior School event.

Proceedings were emceed by Proud and Maple and featured Year 8 singing and speeches by Leila, Miki and JJ - in three languages no less. The students explained how teachers change and enhance their lives. They shape lives with patience, wisdom and dedication. They are positive influences, mentors, guides and role models. They prepare children for life - not exams!

We hope all our teachers had a wonderful day! Thank you for all that you do.

IGCSE Success!

Our Year 11 students are currently in the middle of their Mock IGCSE Exams and all of them are working very hard. We wish them all success in both these exams and, of course, the real thing in Summer Term. In Michaelmas Term, several of our students were entered early for their Mathematics IGCSE and we are delighted to share that they have ALL gained the top grade of A*. We congratulate Vicky, J-Jean, Kunpat and Jerry. Well done on all your hard work to achieve these grades and thank you so much to all our teachers for their support and guidance.

Science Fair

Many of our Junior School Scientists are all working hard preparing to take part in a Bangkok Schools Science Fair which is taking place this term. Children in Years 3-6 can make individual entries or join up as teams of 2. Their mission is to create an invention to solve one of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. This is a wonderful initiatives and students will compete both in Wellington and against other schools to see their invention succeed. Contact Ms Beth Upton, Head of Junior School Science to find out more. See details below -

Here are the UN Sustainable Development Goals to remind us all!

Global Citizenship Day

You may have
spotted a LOT of pyjamas around Junior School today for Global Citizenship Day. Our students got to wear their pyjamas today to create a relaxed and thoughtful atmosphere to reflect on what makes a Global Citizen. They have been taking part in various themed activities. Early Years took part in a PAWS workshop, KS1 worked on creating House elephants– images will be used on bags and other merchandise in the future. Years 3-6 have been making special bunting which will be used in school in future events.

Being a Global Citizen is important to all of us and we thank Ms Tanisha McCraw and all our Junior School teachers and leaders for making this day a huge success!

COMMUNITY EVENT! ALL STARS RUN

Wellington All-Stars Run: A Great Start to a Healthy 2025!

Dear Parents and School Community,

Happy New Year! We hope you’ve all had a restful holiday and are feeling refreshed as we kick off what promises to be an exciting and fulfilling 2025. To get us all into the spirit of health, fitness, and community, we are thrilled to announce the upcoming Wellington All-Stars Run, a fantastic event for all ages, which will be held right here at the school on Monday, 17 February from 3:00 PM to 6:30 PM.

This event is a wonderful way for students, staff, and parents alike to celebrate the new year with fun, fitness, and friendly competition. Here’s what you can look forward to:

  • Children’s 100m Dash: Our student runners can take part in a thrilling 100m dash, where they will compete for Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals based on their times, divided by year group. It’s all about fun, participation, and building that competitive spirit!

  • 5.2k Kingsley Run: For those who are looking for a bit more of a challenge, senior school students, parents, and teachers are invited to join the 5.2k Kingsley Run. Not only will the fastest runners be awarded medals (Gold, Silver, and Bronze), but the overall winner will have their name proudly displayed on the Leadership Board in our school sports hall! What an honor it will be to see your name up there for all to admire.

In addition to the races, we’ll have great music, snacks, and drinks to keep everyone energized and in high spirits throughout the event. We’ll be setting up a ticket booth next week, so keep an eye out for details on how you can sign up for the event.

We encourage everyone to participate, whether you’re running, cheering on your friends and family, or simply enjoying the festive atmosphere. We can’t wait to see you all there as we kick off 2025 with healthy competition, school spirit, and a sense of community.

Warm regards,

Badminton

Congratulations to our Wellington Bangkok Badminton teams who have just started competing. Our Under 15 Boys and Girls played at SISB yesterday and made the podium in the Boys' Doubles and Girls' Doubles. Well done to May and Emerald (2nd place) and Garm and Mawin (3rd place). It's all about the team and everyone played their part - showing determination, effort and great sporting behaviour.

This is a sport which is growing fast with tons of interest across school so we look forward to greater things to come! Thank you to the team for representing us - Garm, Mawin, Colin, Jedi, Saida, May, Emerald and Ortin. Thank you to Mr Fin Bailey for supporting and inspiring the team!

Football

Our Under 18 Girls' Football team were in action against SISB yesterday in our first GBAC fixture and we congratulate them all for an excellent effort resulting in a 7-0 win. It is a hugely busy term for all these girls with all of them in the middle of Mock IGCSE and AS Levels and we appreciate them working as a team, honing their skills and emerging with an excellent result. We look forward to a great season of games this term and thank all of our coaches for their inspiration.

Table Tennis

Wellington College retained the Junior School GBAC Table Tennis Trophy, in the second year of this tournament, but it was a closely contested affair against their arch-rivals, SISB. The 2025 event, hosted at Wellington, attracted 50 students from 5 international schools!

In a thrilling climax to the Under 11 tournament, a golden point tie-breaker was the difference between the SISB finishing first and the Wellington team settling for runners-up. For Wellington, Ben (Year 5), Jordan (Year 5), and Raphael (Year 5) won 4 matches each, whilst Gabriel (Year 6) was undefeated throughout the morning.

In the Under 9 competition, the roles were reversed with the Wellington A team winning all their matches without losing a single set. Congratulations to Paman (Year 4), Sean (Year 4), Sky (Year 5), and their captain Kraam (Year 5).

The overall trophy went to Wellington for the best performance across both age groups. The Wellington Dukes captain, Gabriel, celebrated his player of the tournament performance when he collected the winner’s trophy from our Master, Mr Chris Nicholls.

Thank you to our Head of Table Tennis, Dr Peter Church and to all our teachers, coaches and supporters!
