Dear Parents

It’s been a restricted week, unfortunately, with Bangkok’s poor air quality keeping us indoors for much of the time. Although air pollution is a source of worry for us all, the simple fact is that we can only do our best, trust the process and move forward.

Our decisions are generally systematic and cautious, but one principle is to keep the school open as much as we can. If you have personal concerns, though, please do talk to us. I would not frown upon individual decisions to do what you feel is best for your child in these very unusual circumstances.

As I said in an email earlier this week: when we keep children indoors all day, they do become frustrated (because they need to move around!), so even ‘safety’ does have negative consequences on behaviour and wellbeing.

But we can look on the bright side: the forecast for Tuesday’s air looks pretty good, and we’re already halfway through bad-air season. The future looks good :)

With best wishes

Chris

Dear Parents

As you are aware we have made the decision to postpone our Open Morning tomorrow. We have so many of our teachers, staff and students involved and so many planned visitors to our campus and we have to think of the health and safety of everyone.

Our Open Mornings are very popular and always attract hundreds of visitors so we are happy to tell you that we will be announcing a new date very soon. The new details will be communicated to all registered visitors – but please do tell your friends!

I am very grateful to all students who had volunteered to act as Tour Guides, speakers and performers. We hope that they can all make it on the new date. Thank you for all your support and understanding.

Have a great weekend!

Jane

FOBISIA Battle of the Bands

We are excited to share some great success for The Senses from Wellington College Bangkok at the FOBISIA Battle of the Bands in KL, Malaysia. We won the Gold (top) category and took overall third place. Over 100 schools entered for this prestigious competition with 18 invited to the Finals.

Huge congratulations to Nida, Yuri, Eiffel, Garm and Rods who wowed the audience with Moves Like Jagger and Don’t Start Now! The band now plan a recording session, working towards a new playlist set.

As always we are hugely grateful to Mr Rayad Denyer-Green and the Music team who supported and inspired these students. Mr Denyer-Green says "The students were awesome! There was only one point in it for the top three places! Very close. It was such a fantastic experience for the students to participate in this high-profile event. The overall standard was incredibly high, far exceeding our expectations, so the band should be extremely proud of their achievements. "  WOW! We can't wait to see what they do next!

Teachers Visit Chaiyapruk Foundation

A group of 9 teachers visited the Chaiyapruk Foundation, one of our four chosen charities last Saturday. In the morning they planted string beans, played with goats and joined the children for a lovely lunch. After lunch, they did some reading, drawing, singing and football. It was a lovely experience for the teachers and for Wellington students Rocco, Tizzy and Fergus, spending time with the residents and founder Dr Cleopandh.

Chaiyapruk Foundation is a wonderful organization caring for abandoned children and providing them with a home. You can find out more at their website. Please help them if you can. Everything helps!

Year 2 Sports Day

This week has been subject to a lot of change, as we look to keep all our children safe from the AQI issues. On Wednesday we were able to hold our Year 2 Sports Day in the Sports Hall.

Eat, Move, Thrive, was a thoughtfully created event blending physical activity with meaningful learning experiences, featuring four activity stations, each reinforcing the importance of health, teamwork, and active living.

In Supermarket Sweep, pairs worked together to steer their "trolley" and collect food items, while Healthy Choices challenged children to hit targets, identify foods, and sort them into healthy or unhealthy categories to earn house points. The Healthy Bodies obstacle course tested their agility, coordination, balance and speed, and Healthy Steps kept them energised with the completion of crab kicks and star jumps.

Year 2 students tackled every activity with enthusiasm, teamwork, and determination, making the morning a true celebration of movement, wellness, and fun learning!

Thank you to Ms Helen Mathews, Director of Sports, and all her team for making this an amazing event and to all the parents for their support.

Years 5 and 6 Sports Day

Our Years 5 and 6 event went ahead safely on Tuesday and the air was safe to stick to the original outdoor plan meaning we were able to use our Front Field and full size running track and we all had a lot of fun! House spirit was in full flow - not just in the races and activities - but also with the House boards, with all students invited to contribute and support.

Thank you to all the students for trying their best - and to all our teachers and particularly the PE team for organisation and inspiration. We are grateful to all our parents for their support - and extra marks for colour coordination!

Cricket

The Wellington College cricketers competed against The British Club on Sunday 19 January at their twice-yearly competitive fixture. Sixteen students from both clubs played an afternoon of high-quality cricket, with The British Club winning the final match for their first ever tournament victory against Wellington.

Both semi-final matches were close games, with Wellington Cheetahs chasing down their target with some big hitting from Felix (Year 8) and Sky (Year 8). In the second semi-final, the Wellington Werewolves lost too many wickets to force the victory in spite of some solid batting from Ikkyu (Year 5). In the final, the Wellington Cheetahs could not scramble enough runs, and The British Lions proved too strong on the day, against some spirited bowling from captain George (Year 7) and Doln (Year 7).

The re-match will be at Wellington College on Saturday 3 May and training resumes in earnest with the Cheetahs looking to get back to winning ways.

As always, we thank our tireless Sports coaches – Head of Cricket, Dr Peter Church and Mr Saiju Mammen.
