Dear Parents

This week saw a wonderful set of festivities in school to mark another Chinese New Year.  They seem to come faster every year, don’t they? This year it’s the turn of the Snake again, and our Mandarin Department did a fabulous job of bringing a taste of the traditions of China to our campus as part of the celebrations. My thanks to Ms Tian, Ms Mo, Ms Yang, Ms Deng, Ms Li, Ms Cheng, Ms Sissi for all their hard work in preparation. Many thanks also to the parents who organized and contributed to the amazing Chinese food extravaganza on Wednesday afternoon: delicious!

The air quality is likely to keep bobbing and weaving for at least the duration of February, so – although most of this week was pretty clean – we remain ready to take action when required. This week, we added another 20% to our air purifying capacity across the school, and will continue to work on all aspects of this difficult citywide problem.

Have an excellent weekend!

With best wishes

Chris

A Visit To Somporn Kroong Anusorn School

Ms Xiuxian (Molly) Mo has shared a lovely update about a significant trip this week. On Tuesday, a group of our students visited Somporn Kroong Anusorn, a local Thai school. The students were Miki, Clareko, Ella, and Ivy from Year 10, and Rada, Kin, PaoPao, Grace, and Emily from Year 9.

They hosted a mini English camp and taught younger children English language skills. The leaders, teachers, and students at the school shared that they were incredibly impressed by our students.

Ms Mo explains “Everyone involved thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon". Our students were even asked for autographs! The school also asked when we might return, as their children are already looking forward to our next visit.

As always, I am very proud of our Wellington students for their kindness, enthusiasm, and ability to tackle various challenges. “

This is true global citizenship and we are very proud of all of our students involved.

Chinese New Year Celebrations

We have had a wonderful week celebrating the Chinese New Year here at Wellington. We have certainly ushered in the Year of the Snake in great style. On Wednesday we had a joyous dress up day as children, parents and teachers all wore traditional Chinese outfits and took part in lots of different activities. We say a HUGE THANK YOU to our Chinese teaching team led by Ms Chunzi (Tina) Tian. Thank you all - Ms Mo, Ms Yang, Ms Deng, Ms Li, Ms Cheng, Ms Sissi. We appreciate the huge amount of effort and organisation that went into these celebrations.

Our Chinese parent community simply blew us away with their support this week. On Wednesday both Junior and Senior lobbies were filled with excited chatter and delicious aromas as our parents hosted snacks for everyone. Delicious calkes, fruits, dumplings and more. There was also traditional crafting on display. We are so grateful to you all! Happy Year of the Snake!

Dazzling Drama!

IGCSE Drama

If you are in Year 9 and finalising your choices for IGCSEs in August – then why not take a look at what our current Year 10 students have to say. These talented young people chose Drama because it’s fun, it’s a great bonding experience and so much more. Hear them explain in their own words. Our Drama Teacher, Mr Ashley Edwards is happy to explain more whether you are choosing options now – or planning for the next academic years.

And meanwhile our Year 11 Drama students are filming their second production next week for their exams. We love the set and costumes and can’t wait to watch it next week.

Art Projects

Don’t forget how much amazing art work is going on in our Art department. Not a centimetre of this expanded suite of studios is going unused. Head of Art, Ms Duna Carbonell and Art Teacher, Mr Daniel Scott have been ensuring that our students have had a lot of fun with two different projects linked to Chinese New Year.

Produced and filmed by our Year 9 students during their art lessons, this shadow cinema performance celebrates Chinese New Year while honouring the traditional art of shadow puppetry in Chinese Art. Similarly, Year 8 students collaborated to create a sculpture for the occasion, focusing on the Year of the Snake. Both projects showcase our students' creativity, and highlight their deep appreciation for the cultural diversity found in our community, as well as their respect for the rich traditions of the Chinese New Year.

Science Fest at King’s College

This week, 16 students from Years 6-9 had the exciting opportunity to travel to King’s College Bangkok for a day packed with engaging science activities centred around the theme ‘Adapt and Change’. Throughout the day, students tackled chemistry-themed escape rooms, participated in a creative STEAM challenge to build a marble run from paper, explored pendulum experiments, and learnt about bird beaks and adaptation.

A highlight of the event was the chance for our students to collaborate with budding scientists from various schools across Bangkok, exchanging ideas and insights. It was a truly enriching experience, and we’re already looking forward to participating again next year.

A big thank you to King’s College for hosting such an inspiring event, and to the fantastic students who accompanied Mr Callum Vickerstaff and Ms Beth Upton on the trip – your enthusiasm and teamwork were exemplary, and you represented our school brilliantly.

Science just gets better and better here at Wellington. We love the participation from our whole community. If you’d like to find out more – please contact any of our Wellington Science teachers.

This is such a wonderful opportunity to learn about each other’s cultures, academic programmes, sports, leisure, languages and more.

Chris Woolf from our Wellington International team talks to our students as part of the DukeBox podcast. Have a listen and find out more!
