Dear Parents

Further to my earlier email, here are the Relief Agencies we are told are reliable for getting aid directly to the earthquake victims in Myanmar. If you know of any others, please do let me know. Sadly, we are all aware that scammers always take advantage of tragic events such as this, so we have to be cautious.

School is Legally a No-Vaping Zone

This week, we were officially informed by OPEC, the Thai Government’s Office of the Private Education Commission, of four things.

  1. All schools must raise awareness about the dangers and legal penalties associated with all types of e-cigarette.
  2.  All schools must clearly display signs indicating that the area is a smoke-free and e-cigarette-free zone.
  3. Every school must actively prevent any and all involvement of students and staff in usage, distribution, or possession of any and all types of e-cigarette.
  4. If any student or staff member is found with an e-cigarette, or discovered to be involved in any way with e-cigarettes, the authorities must be informed.

For your information

It is illegal to bring e-cigarettes into Thailand. It is also illegal to sell or otherwise distribute e-cigarettes in Thailand.

Penalties for breaking this law include:

  • Fine up to THB 500,000
  • Prison up to 5 years
  • (For foreigners) possible deportation

Health risks of vaping include:

Damage to a developing brain, including:

  • Weakened attention
  • Decreased learning ability
  • Insufficient impulse control
  • Poor mood regulation

Damage to lungs, including:

  • Exposure to airborne PM2.5 spiking at approx. 500–1000 µg/m³ for each puff
  • Risk to friends and family members from ‘secondary vaping’
  • Exposure to eg formaldehyde and heavy metals in the vapour

You will already know that vaping is unfortunately common amongst young people these days.

Please do ensure that your children never bring any type of e-cigarette or vape to school or to any school-related activity. I will, of course, immediately report to the authorities any student who is caught breaking this rule.

Sorry to spend so much time on this issue – but it is important!

With best wishes

Chris

Dear Lovely Wellington Community

I wanted to use this space for a very personal message this week. As lots of you know already, I am at the end of my three years as Director of Admissions and Marketing here at Wellington College Bangkok. My family are returning to our home in London this summer and life will really change!

I am very proud of how our Wellington community has grown and the number of wonderful families we now have here. When I joined the school at the start of 2022, we were emerging from COVID-19, there were 500 students and the oldest year group was Year 9! We now have almost 1000 students here and in August that will be 1100. We have a Sixth Form! We have a Wellington family which has grown by recommendation and is truly the finest school in Bangkok. That is down to you, our families! What a pleasure it has been to show so many of you our beautiful facilities for the very first time!

I will miss everyone very much. I thank you all for the welcome you have given me and the amazing support I have had from so many of you. I don’t think I can ever hope to attend Christmas Fayres on the scale we have had here – not just once but every year! And a special shout out to our Performing Arts team – what joy I have had from seeing our productions, concerts and shows. Every day brings a mini adventure, every day makes me smile as I see how much the students enjoy their time here.

I will be around for a few more days. Come and say goodbye if you have a moment. You can contact me directly by Line, WhatsApp or email if you have a personal query. Otherwise you can get in touch with admissions@wellingtoncollege.ac.th or marketing@wellingtoncollege.ac.th

Thank you to all the Marketing and Admissions teams, to Community Engagement and Events – you are all amazing. Thank you to all our colleagues – Wellington teachers are inspirational!

I wish you all successful and happy lives ahead. Keep in touch!

Jane

On Thursday, 1 May, we will be celebrating what it means to be a Wellington Global Citizen, and we’d love your support. Can you help with any of the following three events?

Cultural bites - Global Food Fayre

In the Junior School, each year group will represent two different countries by bringing in traditional foods (please see the list below). The food should be snack-sized portions, with enough to serve approximately 200 students.

For example:

Year 1 Carle and Year 1 Yamada are representing Singapore. Families could provide Durian Puffs and Curry Puffs, 200 puffs need to be given in total.

We appreciate your help in sharing delicious flavours from around the world!

Please make sure NO NUTS and limit packaging in line with us trying to be more sustainable

Cultural bites - Bake Sale

In the Senior school, we would like students to bring in cakes, cookies and treats for a bake sale. Ideally these food items will be homemade and must have NO NUTS. These will be sold on Thursday 1 May at the Global Citizenship expo. Parents and students are invited to drop off baked goods (such as cookies, cakes, and bread) at the Senior School Lobby from the morning of Thurs 1 May. Homemade baked goods will be especially appreciated. All proceeds from the sale will be donated to charity.

To ensure alignment with our health and safety policies, please kindly label your baked goods with a list of ingredients.

Jumble Sale – Donate and Make a Difference

As part of our celebration, we are hosting a jumble sale—a great opportunity to declutter while supporting a good cause. We are collecting:

  • Toys in good condition
  • Clothes (please ensure they are washed before donating)

All donated items will be priced by students and sold, with all proceeds going to charity. Donations open from Mon 31 March. Drop-off points will be in the JS Lobby and SS Lobby

Please get in touch with Ms Molly Mo and Ms Tanisha McCraw with any questions or offers of help!

Junior School Production

Now the excitement of our Senior production of the Addams Family is over, it’s time to get ready for the very best that our Junior School students have to offer! On 22 and 23 May we will be presenting A Hint of Snow White – a Year 6 Production, ably backed by Years 3, 4 and 5.

The show is directed by Ms Tanisha McCraw supported by Mr John Ludvigsen and Mr Jason Dass and our amazing ALTs and support staff - Ms B, Mr Paul, Ms Gam and Ms Gemma. The Tech team are working with K Arm in the theatre.

Keep your diaries free for 22 May at 14.00 and 23 May at 9.30. We’ll share more details as the weeks go by but watch out for more fabulous costumes by Ms Juby Scammells, lots of photography of rehearsals and a lovely teaser film! We’ll keep you updated!

A Week of Music!

There has been lots of wonderful music going on in school this week. Following on from the Senior School Parent Workshop and Year 3 Open Classrooms last week – there were several great events this week, too!

Monday brought a beautiful Harpsichord performance and workshops for both our Senior School Music Scholars and our Year 3 students. They all loved hearing music on the grandfather of the grand piano! Our pianists commented on the difference in placement of the hands, the style and tone of the two instruments. Thank you so much to Mr Alberto Firrincieli who brought his skills – and the fabulous harpsichord to share with so many.

Tuesday saw a Café Concert in Senior School featuring some of our least experienced performers – and they did a magnificent job!

On Wednesday and Thursday, our Director of Performing Arts, Sinead Corrigan, and her team organised World Piano Day celebration recitals in the theatre. The grand piano took centre stage as students of all abilities took to the stage to play across many different genres of music. For some it was one of their first experiences playing, for others, one of many experiences of performing on great stages. We are so proud of all our students!

Thank you to the Music team, led by Ms Sinead Corrigan, Director of Performing Arts. This has been a great week!

Swimming

This week saw success at the National Youth Games for two of our star swimmers – Pangrum (Year 8) and Orca (Year 12). Orca brought home a Silver and a Bronze medal with Pangrum claiming Gold in the 200m Breaststroke, breaking her own record! She also scored a Silver, increasing our tally still further.  Thank you to Coach James Goddard for inspiring all our swimmers to do such great things!
