Dear Parents

I often say ‘if there’s a problem, I want to fix it’. Sadly, that means I’m often thinking about problems.

But walking through the school, on any day, problems is not what I see. I see happy, purposeful, active, lively, focused Early Years students making fundamental discoveries about the world. I see older students discussing, organising, challenging, developing ideas and understanding. I see fantastic swimming lessons – not just fun but structured, careful, and potentially life-saving. I see students chatting confidently with teachers. I see young people slowly – but surely – finding out who they are, and who they are going to be.

As I noted in an email earlier this week, there’s a bit of Covid around at the moment. Years 9 and 10 studied online from home today (Friday), and we’re monitoring other year groups across the school just in case it becomes necessary to take further action to limit spread. Those in Y11 and Y12, who are taking their IGCSEs and A-levels, should be comforted to know that our Examination Boards – Cambridge, Oxford and Pearson – all have very careful protocols for any eventuality. If, for example, a student is unlucky enough to catch an illness at exam time, Special Consideration policies exist to support them.

The weather’s been a little wet lately. Good for the roses, as we say in the UK. I hope you are able to dance between the raindrops this weekend.

With best wishes

Chris

Year 10 Exchange Update from the UK

Head of Senior School, Mrs Sharp, recently attended a COBIS conference in the UK, and during her trip, she visited Wellington College UK to meet with the team there, as well as to check in with the four Year 10 Wellington College Bangkok students who are currently on the return leg of their exchange trip.

Dew, Miki, Ploen, and Sainahm travelled to England recently and have been benefiting from this unique opportunity.

Mrs Sharp mentioned that our students were brimming with excitement and clearly having a wonderful time. There was no time for jet lag as the students enjoyed an action-packed day in London on Sunday, and went straight into lessons on Monday.

The students have been enjoying the British weather, which has been uncharacteristically sunny and dry with temperatures in the low 20°s. Mrs Sharp assured them that it is not often as pleasant!

It was clear our students had formed close friendships with the Wellington College UK students, and it was fantastic for Mrs Sharp to see them reunited after the previous exchange in Bangkok in October.

All four students are sure to have a fabulous couple of weeks enjoying everything that Wellington College UK has to offer! Lucky them!

Outstanding Success in the Bebras Coding Challenge!

We are thrilled to announce that five of our students ranked in the top 10% in Thailand in this year’s Bebras Coding Challenge, showcasing their sharp logic, exceptional problem-solving abilities, and advanced coding skills:

- Chris (Year 9)

- Wish (Year 9)

- Clareko (Year 10)

- Meimei (Year 10)

- Doln (Year 7)

A special congratulations to Chris, Clareko, and Doln, who achieved a perfect score of 48/48 – a truly remarkable feat that highlights their computational mastery.

With over 2.5 million students worldwide participating, the Bebras Coding Challenge is a prestigious test of computational thinking. Students are tasked with solving 10 complex coding scenarios, each requiring precise, working Python code under time pressure.

Join us in celebrating these talented coders for their impressive achievements — and a special thank you to Mr Ward for his expert guidance and encouragement throughout the challenge!

Senior School GSL Project Spotlight

As part of our Global Social Leaders (GSL) programme, six groups of our Senior School students are working on different projects, each aiming to make a positive impact in the community. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be introducing each group and highlighting the meaningful work they’re doing to create change.

This week, we’re spotlighting Namjai.

Formed by Peppin (Year 11), and Miki, Ella, Ivy, and Clareko (Year 10), Namjai is tackling one of Thailand’s most urgent environmental issues: water pollution. Every year, approximately 4,000 tonnes of plastic enter the Gulf of Thailand from the Chao Phraya River. To combat this, the team is raising awareness about plastic waste, supporting river-cleaning efforts, and educating the next generation on how they can help.

Working in partnership with Everwave, a river-cleaning organisation, Namjai has already helped remove more than two tonnes of waste from the river. Through presentations and fundraising events including here at Wellington—they’ve raised 342,000 THB to support their mission. Their next step? Hosting educational workshops in local schools, starting later this month.

Their takeaway message says it all:

“We’ve learnt that while the problem is massive, small actions can lead to meaningful change—and just starting is the most valuable and meaningful part of any project.”
