Dear Parents

As a former (very bad) lead guitarist myself, I am always delighted to see student bands emerging. I really enjoyed watching the video of Y4’s Sussy Baka performing, and winning gold medals, at the recent International Music Talent Competition in Bangkok.  Today Thailand, tomorrow the world!

This week, I’d like to write briefly about the Junior School and Early Years teachers who will be moving on at the end of the year. It’s always bittersweet to see a member of our team take the next step in their own career journey – but that’s definitely the nature of international education, and I always remember that Wellington has one of the lowest teacher turnover rates amongst competitor schools here.

Ms Georgia Weaving joined Wellington in 2019. Over the course of her six years here, she has been a wonderfully kind, professional and caring teacher in Nursery, building and developing such a strong curriculum and ethos for the year group. She has also been Head of Nursery for the past three years.

Ms Katie Wyke joined the school three years ago as a Reception teacher. Katie did exceptional work in establishing the very successful Read Write Inc phonics programme in the Junior school. At the same time, her class teaching has never taken a back seat: she loves the Reception year group and is always committed to the success of every child. Katie returns to the UK to continue her career.

Ms Laura Balfour joined our Early Years team in 2023, and immediately established such wonderful relationships with all of her children and parents. She is a teacher, and a person, who radiates such kindness and patience in all that she does. Laura moves on with her husband to the Middle East.

Ms Clare Milan also joined the school, in 2023, as a Year 1 teacher. Her calm, reassuring and gentle presence has proven to be so supportive of the children in her care: Year 1 will very much miss her expertise and expertise, as well as everything else she has to share.  Clare returns to the UK.

Ms Kesta McLeish, who has taught with great success in both Year 6 and Year 2, also joined in 2023. Kesta is particularly passionate about developing children's love for reading, and can always be relied on to find many creative ways to inspire them. Kesta also returns to the UK for the next phase of her career.

Ms Hazel Brinkworth, another from the 2023 intake, has taught classes in Year 5 and Year 3 over her two years here. Her ability to really understand and support children is one of the keys to her success as an educator, using her coaching ethos to discover the full potential in everyone.  Hazel will remain in Thailand, as the next step in her career takes her in a slightly different direction.

Mr Ben Cooper has brought so much energy and enthusiasm to the school during his two years here. He is always involved in one sport or another at playtimes with the children, modelling both healthy competitiveness and fair play.  Ben is also famous for the skills he has demonstrated in the ultimate frisbee enrichment!  Ben departs for the Middle East with his wife.

Mr Tom Ratcliffe came to Bangkok in August 2022 and has taught classes in Year 5 and Year 4 during his time with us. Tom is a keen sportsman, and someone who is always able to find a way to get his students motivated and excited to learn. Tom also returns to the UK for the next step in his career.

Mr Jason Dass has been with us for three years. Dynamic and upbeat, he is known not just for his excellent class teaching but also for cricket, triathlon and for organising two outstanding ski trips to Japan. He really does get involved in all things Wellington. So much energy and enthusiasm brought to the classroom! Jason is planning to travel to South America, and will take some time in Thailand preparing.

Mr Nick Cadman, our Junior School Art specialist, came to Wellington in 2022. He has inspired so many of our Y3-6 children in their love of art. His kind and gentle manner supports each child's developing confidence and ability to flourish. His next step will be in China, where he joins Dulwich Beijing.

Ms Beth Upton, who has been here since 2021, began her Wellington career as a Year 2 class teacher, before moving into the Junior School Lab as our Science Specialist. Beth built and established our full Junior School Science curriculum, ran the hugely successful Green Team, and created Upton Zoo!  She will leave us to join her next school in the Middle East.

Ms Caitlyn Cheng has been teaching Mandarin with us since August 2021.  She always displays such creativity and so many ideas in her teaching of the subject – and it has been particularly wonderful this year seeing her work on the Early Years Mandarin curriculum.  Caitlyn will continue her career in Thailand.

Kru Aut, Thai teacher, has only been with us for one year.  In this time, she has shown herself to be such a calm and confident teacher of Thai, with a real passion to always work hard and deliver the best for the children in her classes. She will move to the USA with her family – and, we hope, teach some Thai to the Americans!

Have a great long weekend; see you on Wednesday!

With best wishes

Chris

This week, our Master joined the Blood Donation Drive by hopping on the donation bus for a quick chat with Mr Findlay about why giving blood matters. In just a minute, they talked about the impact of small acts of kindness—like donating blood—and how they can make a big difference beyond our school gates.

A huge thank you to all the parents, teachers, staff, and community members who took part in this meaningful event. Your generosity helps extend care and support to those who need it most.

You can read more about this important activity below.

Year 2 Sleep Over
What an unforgettable Year 2 sleepover we had on Thursday! The children had an amazing time – from a brilliant pool party and fun house challenges to designing their own t-shirts and enjoying lots of tasty food. We ended the evening with a story around our homemade ‘campfire’, complete with hot chocolate and marshmallows, and a cosy film. We were so proud of the children’s independence, teamwork, and support for one another. They showed true resilience and are more than ready for Year 3!

Pre-Nursery Trip to Sookjaima Farm

This week marked a special milestone for our Pre-Nursery children as they enjoyed their very first school trip — a visit to Sookjaima Farm!

The day offered meaningful opportunities for our little learners to explore a new environment, connect with nature, and build greater independence. They enthusiastically took part in hands-on activities, including collecting eggs from chickens, feeding the animals, and decorating their own plant pots to take home.

We were so proud of the confidence, curiosity, and kindness they showed throughout the day. A heartfelt thank you to our wonderful parent helpers — your calm, caring presence helped make this a safe and memorable experience for everyone.

Wellington x Thai Red Cross | Blood Donation Drive

Today, we joined hands with the Thai Red Cross to hold a blood donation drive onsite, right outside our Senior School entrance. It was heartwarming to see staff, parents, and friends all step up to donate, showing how much our community cares for such a great cause.

Every drop counts and today reminded us how powerful it is when we come together to help others in need and support the wider community. We’re really proud to support this important cause and thankful to everyone who took part. Together, we’re making a real difference.

Special thanks to the Thai Red Cross and their staff for your professionalism and smooth coordination throughout the day. We can’t wait to welcome you back again!

Senior School GSL Project Spotlight

As part of our Global Social Leaders (GSL) programme, six groups of Senior School students are working on projects aimed at making a real difference in the community. Each week, we’ll introduce one of these inspiring groups and the meaningful impact they’re making.

This week, we shine a light on Seawaves — a passionate group of Year 8 students: Ivy, Nidi, Summer, and Nera.

Motivated by the urgent threats facing our oceans including pollution, overfishing, and climate change — Seawaves is on a mission to raise awareness and promote sustainable change. Their goal: to help make our oceans cleaner and safer for all.

The group started by organising beach and ocean clean-ups, collecting plastic waste and transforming it into practical and creative items like tables, chairs, bracelets, and keyrings. They even partnered with a local business that recycles plastic into stylish accessories.

During Global Citizenship Week, Seawaves also held a bake sale offering delicious homemade treats and upcycled crafts. Thanks to the support of our school community, they raised an impressive 19,000 baht, which they donated to the Veterinary Medical Aquatic Animal Research Centre (VMARC). These funds will support medical care for injured marine animals and help further VMARC’s important research and rescue efforts.

A big congratulations to Seawaves for turning compassion into action and showing us the power of student-led change and a heartfelt thanks to Ms Mo, our Senior School GSL Lead for your invaluable guidance and support throughout their journey

Last weekend, our Year 7 and Year 8 students competed in football, basketball, and athletics at the GBAC Games. Despite the intense heat and tough opposition, they showed outstanding sportsmanship, resilience, and determination throughout all events. Their teamwork, enthusiasm, and support for one another were truly inspiring. They represented our school with pride and proved to be an amazing group of young athletes. Well done to everyone involved!

The WCIB U9A team boys had an incredible run at the GBAC tournament! Although they narrowly lost the final to ANS in a thrilling penalty shootout, their skills and sportsmanship was amazing throughout the tournament

Some standout performances included:

- WCIB 2 - 0 REG
- WCIB 2 - 0 GIS
- WCIB 2 - 0 AST
- WCIB 0 - 0 ANS (lost 2-1 in penalties)

Kudos to the boys for their amazing performance!

EYFS Superhero Sports Day
Our Superhero Sports Day was an absolute blast! The children really got into character, taking on each challenge like true little heroes. The day was packed with fun obstacle courses that put their bravery and agility to the test. Some of the highlights:

Bouncy Bay – bouncing through challenges with superhero style.
Lava Lane – leaping over ‘molten lava’ without a second thought.
Spiderman Rooftops – climbing, balancing, and showing real control.
Piranha Lagoon – tiptoeing through ‘dangerous waters’ with sharp focus.

They also showed off their aim and strength with throwing games like Alien Force Field, Dinosaur Splat, and Meteor Knockdown.

All day, the children lived out our school values – Ready, Safe, and Respect. From the Save the Animal mission, where they worked together with care, to the Running Dice Game, where they took turns and thought on their feet.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make the day such a success.
